Aladdin - By Kirk Woodward Aladdin tricks the madi by disguising himself as the princess

Synopsis of Aladdin Aladdin Photo - The Princess trapped in the tower

A universally comedic play, this particular Aladdin provides humor for audiences of all ages. Aladdin, a lazy wastrel of a boy, falls into a quest to save the princess from her evil father, to escape the tyranny of his demanding guardian Durella, and to outsmart the treachery of his enemy, the Madi. All of this is accomplished with the help of an unusual magic lamp, and an even more unusual - and unconventional genie.

Lighting Design Concept for Aladdin Aladdin Photo - Aladdin trapped in the Cave The minimalistic scenic design and wide playing space mandated that the lighting make the theatrical environment more intimate and enclosed. The lighting strove to confine the playing space and make the stage seem less like a runway. Aladdin is kept intentionally bright and cheery, to ensure the comedic moments are not lost, but eerie moments such as the cave give allowance to darker, more textural, moodier lighting effects. The tower lighting attempts to enhance the sense of imprisonment and isolation suffered by the Princess, and the color choices and intensity of lighting in the desert attempt to feel oppressive and exhausting.
