Project 4 − Digital Lighting of an Interior Highlighted Photo

This project involved the addition of color, textures and descriptive lighting to a digital still life within a space, based on the genre scheme − Science Fiction − developed in the previous project.

Project Date 02/21/2002 Project DescriptionDigital Lighting of an Interior − Studying Color and Textures on a Still Life through Genre

Project Guidelines Through the use of descriptive shaders and lights, the images created were intended to expand the composition in mood and drama. The lighting design should enhance, describe and inform the viewer on the genre, and images should vary in light quantity and placement to address genre issues.

The final product was a nine-second (270 frame) animation beginning with my genre and transitioning, through animation, to my partner's genre.

Concept Statement  The film genre of science fiction makes frequent use of heavily saturated reds, ambers and blues in lighting and special effects. To incorporate these hues into the attic scene I was presented with, a storyline was developed in which the small lantern in the bottom−right of the image would serve as a beacon revealing life-forms on the walls that were otherwise invisible. Over the course of the animation, the beacon fades up, shifts color, and then fades out again. As it changes, the walls can be seen crawling with textured 'alien' organisms of the same shade.

Highlighted Photo

There is a 9 second Quicktime movie showing the lighting and animation associated with this project. The first 3 seconds are my genre, followed by three seconds of transition to my partner's genre, and then a three second still image of his title−frame. Click here to view the file. (1.3 MB)
