I have been designing lighting for the luxury fashion, jewelry, clothing, and cosmetics industries for several years, and have had the opportunity to work with several stellar brands and award-winning architectural and interior design firms in the process. My client list includes high-end jewelers such as Rolex, Baccarat, Kwiat Diamonds, and Omega Watches; merchants of fine apparel and leather goods like Michael Kors, Tory Burch, Diesel, Catherine Malandrino, Rock & Republic, and Anne Fontaine; and cosmetics stores Loreal/Lancome, Bobbie Brown, Guerlain, and Space NK. I have also designed architectural lighting for restaurants, spas, museums, and other interior spaces in the hospitality and foodservice industries.

Much like an art gallery, the entrance to the sunglasses shop at Wynn Encore displays one-of-a-kind designer shades on spot-lit, glass-topped pedestals. Backlit acrylic panels create a dramatic focal wall behind the point of sale, and perimeter walls in the consultation area contain 88 delicate, brushed metal niches with concealed, fiber-optic light bars from Visual Lighting Technologies. The monumental freestanding displays on the opposite side of the space are internally illuminated, showcasing products on one side and revealing photographic transparencies on the other. Recessed square accent lights provide a soft quality of general illumination throughout, and semi-recessed multiples punch through the ambient light to graze product displays.

At the center of the dome, a custom Roger Thomas designed chandelier is suspended above a decadent, one-of-a-kind couch, composed of over 100,000 Swarovski Crystals. At the shop entrance, a glittering mirror-backed facade with hundreds of strands of hanging crystal beads is flanked by tiered window displays, lit with chrome-finished RSA Galleria combo lights. The shop is elegant, well-textured and comfortable and the lighting contributes to the many shimmering, glittering accents found within.

- Square Footage: 30,000 sq. ft.

Diesel launched their 30,000-sq.ft. 5th Avenue flagship within a very tight timeframe, necessitating a fast-tracked lighting design process and close cooperation between team members. The three-story shop contains a wide range of ceiling heights: rooms as low as 8 foot 6 and ceilings as high as 30 feet. The sleek, European-styled aesthetics desired for the suspended and recessed lighting had to be carefully coordinated between Diesel's lead interior designer and manufacturer Modular International. The light fixtures are not only beautiful but are also used to create a space that is comfortable yet mysterious, dramatic and expressive.

- Architect: O'Neil Langan Architects
Tory Burch has amassed a collection of stores that provides a comfortable residential atmosphere while also utilizing a wild, unpredictable color palette. The design features signature "closets" with luminous ceilings, discreet trimless combo-light fixtures - often recessed into wood tongue and groove ceilings - and long lasting LED linear and puck light solutions in the cabinetry. My involvement with Tory's store designs has included such notable locations as Las Vegas Forum Shops and Palazzo, Chicago, Costa Mesa, Palm Beach, Houston and San Diego, among others. I was also responsible for designing the lighting for their corporate offices and New York showroom.
Kwiat Jewelers

Kwiat Jewelers chose to open a flagship boutique on Madison Avenue in coordination with the renowned diamond seller's 100th anniversary. Since this was the family-owned company's first retail store, it was imperative that details be perfect the first time, and on time.
Michael Kors
- Lighting Designer: Sean Hennessy
- Rollout Scope: 75 stores
- Average Size: 2800 sq. ft.
- Architect(s): Various
After developing the initial rollout lighting design for Michael Kors in 2006, I have continued to manage the design and implementation of more than 75 of their retail stores in the past 3 years. I have designed lighting for their newly completed New York and Las Vegas Flagship stores, as well as full line retail shops around the world and private showrooms in Milan and New York. This multi-platform retail design took full advantage of low-wattage metal halide accent lighting for energy code across the rollout, and utilized high-output T5 fluorescents to draw focus onto the product in conjunction with complex millwork designs.

- Square Footage: ~3000 sq. ft.

- Architect: Barteluce Architects
Omega Watches wanted to ensure that their visions for the lighting of their new 5th Avenue boutique would not only be realized in terms of performance and aesthetics, but also meet local energy codes and product safety/listing requirements. The store design team relied on my expertise for photometric and energy studies, validation of design concept and intent, and cross-over of international lighting specifications.
Rock & Republic at Wynn Encore

- Lighting Designer: Sean Hennessy
- Project Type: Fine Denim Apparel
- Architect: Barteluce Architects

Rock & Republic is a brand that has redefined couture denim and continues to evolve in the world of edgy, urban fashions. The design of their first stand-alone shop at the Wynn Encore Hotel had to evoke these qualities and appeal to highly sophisticated consumers. A back-lit angular wall covered in a fine metal mesh projects into the space and creates stark contrast with the store's mostly dark merchandise. A black crystal Baccarat chandelier provides a sexy centerpiece in the middle of a floating ceiling of Modular International's Aperture series down-lights. Knife-edge coves accent light the perimeter and suspended tracks integrate with the stores barcode ceiling of recycled wood planks. The store's rich Macassar millwork and edge-lit mirrors are illuminated with low-maintenance, low-energy, linear LEDs from Optolum.
Space NK Apothecary
- Lighting Designer: Sean Hennessy
- Location(s): New York, Various
- Rollout Scope: 4 Stores
- Project Type: Cosmetics / Spa
- Architect: O'Neil Langan Architects
Space NK is a leading retailer of luxury fragrances, cosmetics and body care products that began to develop a US presence in 2006-2007, building upon their cult-like success in the UK. I worked closely with O'Neil Langan Architects to create the lighting design for Space NK's United States boutiques, beginning with a high-end flagship location that also houses their corporate offices on Greene Street in Soho.
Space NK wanted to present its customers with a lighting design that was both environmentally friendly as well as visually stunning. Discreet halogen pinholes provide a warm and inviting atmosphere for makeup consultation areas, while metal halide perimeter accents and millwork fluorescents built into the cabinetry still allow merchandise to be star. A rear lounge and private spa/treatment rooms rely upon dimmable fluorescents coves to create a relaxing, glare free environment that is complimented by candlelight.

The displays feature a Terrazzo base with embedded color-changing LEDs from Color Kinetics, routed through side-lit fiber Sensi-tile. In the main salon, the denim counter is backed by a large video wall and flanked on either side by towering denim displays with back-lit opalescent acrylic. Both the lounge and retail lighting designs make extensive use of recessed multiples from RSA Lighting, decorative pendants from Lukas Lighting and Alger International.
Biltmore Estate Carriage House Gift Shop
- Location: Asheville, NC
- Lighting Designer: Sean Hennessy
- Project Type: Historic Gift Shop
- Architect: Little Architectural
The lighting design for the Biltmore Carriage House gift shop had to emulate the historic character of the Estate's architecture while also providing a versatile and energy-efficient lighting system. To accomplish this, a lighting grid was developed that would accommodate a regular track, but that was built to match the size and finish of the distinctive window operating mechanisms within the carriage house. Decorative chandeliers from Meyda Tiffany match the interior finishes and create the appropriate sense of antiquity. LED Lighting from IO Lighting provided an invisible but effective way to wash the millwork displays with high quality point source lighting without any of the heat typically asscociated with incandescents.

- Location: Las Vegas, NV

Catherine Malandrino has been touted as a designer who effectively combines the energy of Manhattan with the romance and elegance of Paris, and her retail shops demonstrate this beautifully. Creative material choices and unusual fixture designs combine to create a unique shopping experience with an upscale but vibrant energy. A glass chandelier composed of hundreds of long glass teardrops creates a signature lighting element for the brand and meshes with the polished chrome and mirrored finishes throughout the shop. The lighting design for this location had to conform to strict energy codes, while providing intense, dramatic lighting effects on a tight budget.

A careful combination of in-case fiber optics, recessed metal halide downlights, and indirect cove lighting provide the perfect balance of intensity, definition, and sparkle to the merchandise at Wynn & Company's jewelry shop in the Las Vegas Encore. The lighting design for the adjoining Rolex store also demanded a wide variety of fiber optic lighting techniques to properly showcase the world's only complete line of Rolex watches on display.
